The first partnership to 10 points wins.
How a hand works
- 1
Short deck
Use only 9, 10, J, Q, K and A of each suit (24 cards). Deal 5 cards each and turn the next card face up.
- 2
Make trump
Going around, each player may 'order up' the face-up card's suit as trump (the dealer picks it up and discards). If everyone passes, each player may name a different suit.
- 3
The bowers
The Jack of trump is the highest card (right bower). The other Jack of the same colour counts as trump and is second-highest (left bower).
- 4
Going alone
The player who makes trump may play alone without their partner for a bigger reward.
- 5
Play five tricks
Follow suit if you can. The calling team needs at least 3 tricks.
Scoring
- Callers take 3 or 4 tricks1

Winning tips
- Two bowers plus an Ace is a strong hand to call.
- Don't order up the dealer with a weak hand — you'll get euchred.
- Lead trump when your partner called.
Popular house rules
- Some tables play to 5 or 7 points.
- 'Stick the dealer': the dealer must name trump if everyone passes twice.
- Some tables award defenders 4 for euchring a lone hand.
